The Ford lineup of trucks delivers a massive amount of power, including the ability to tow up to 13,200 pounds in the 2018 F-150. To enjoy this feature, however, the truck has to be properly equipped. Ford’s Tailor Tow Package, which includes the following features, is key to maximizing the power and utility in your new vehicle. This system comes standard on the F-150 Raptor and is available as an option on the XL trim.
Class IV Trailer Hitch
A Class IV trailer hitch is rated to haul a trailer with a maximum gross weight of 14,000 pounds. This addition, which is essential to towing a large load, ups the capacity to 6,000 pounds on the 3.3-liter Ti-VCT V-6 model and up to 7,000 pounds on a 2018 F-150 equipped with either a 2.7-liter EcoBoost engine or a 5.0-liter V-8. This hitch adds a 4-pin/7-pin wiring harness, the hitch receiver, and a Smart Trailer Tow Connector as well.
A Class IV trailer hitch is a standard feature on the Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited trims. It’s available as an option on the XL and XLT.
4-Pin/7-Pin Wiring Harness
The addition of a 4-pin/7-pin wiring harness allows you to tow as safely as possible. The four-way connector operates the running lights, turn signals, and brake lights. The seven-way connector, which has a 12-volt circuit, includes a circuit for electric trailer brakes and a reverse light. This addition allows you to safely operate trailers that have either of these pin configurations.
Smart Trailer Tow Connector
Ford’s Smart Trailer Tow Connector helps you monitor the status of the trailer you’re towing. This system will display information via the towing menu on the F-150’s instrument panel cluster display. You can see whether your turn signal lamps are operating correctly, whether your brake lights are working, and if the battery has encountered any problems.
Upgraded Front Stabilizer Bar
An upgraded sway bar is bolted to the chassis and connected to the truck’s front and rear suspension to provide torsional resistance. This is key when towing a heavy load, as your truck will be more likely to roll over when turning. Ford’s upgraded front stabilizer bar reduces pitching and rolling and helps keep the truck grounded and always under your control.
Auxiliary Transmission Oil Cooler
The transmission system will get hotter than normal under a heavy load. To counteract the natural rise in temperature that results from towing, the Tow Trailer Package adds an auxiliary transmission oil cooler.
The Trailer Tow Package is essential for towing moderate loads. To equip your F-150 to haul the maximum 13,200 pounds, you’ll need to build a 3.5-liter EcoBoost model equipped with the Max Trailer Tow Package, which adds the above features plus a 3.55 electronic-locking rear axle, 36-gallon fuel tank, engine oil cooler, trailer brake controller, and upgraded rear bumper. The Max Trailer Tow Package + adds Pro Trailer Backup Assist with a trailer hookup lamp, which is also available through the Trailer Tow Package +.
